GRACE Community Clinic Update

With all the changes taking place in the world, GRACE is doing what we can to help ensure the agency is still able to serve clients who do not have access to traditional health care. When news of COVID-19 started to arise, Shirley Roberts, RN, BAS, CCM, our GRACE Clinic Nurse Manager, was quick to respond!  She implemented over-the-phone health screenings, disinfection techniques routinely throughout the day, distributed supplies and educational materials to all GRACE sites, and referral information for callers who were concerned about symptoms. As information and mandates became more encompassing, Shirley and her team modified processes and moved almost all patient visits to a new Telehealth program. On March 27, 2020, the GRACE Community Clinic provided its first full Telehealth clinic. Doxy.me, the platform that is being utilized, is HIPAA compliant and extremely user friendly. With the help of volunteers, GRACE was able to serve nine clients in

GRACE Board Guides GRACE Through Unknown Waters

It was enough to cause whiplash. In the very short time from the February meeting of the GRACE Board of Directors to the March meeting, the world was changed by COVID-19. And the GRACE Board of Directors were faced with a completely new landscape of service provision, staffing, and funding. Led by Paul Bischler, the vice president of finance, treasurer, and chief sourcing officer for BNSF Railway, serving as its president, the GRACE Board took unprecedented steps to ensure the social service agency’s mission was served and its clients continued to receive services and assistance. Keep in mind this occurred at the same time as many Board members were struggling within their own organizations to combat the onset of the coronavirus outbreak. Among the 24-person board are three hospital presidents, and representatives of three banking firms, two church partners, a school board, an energy company, a hotel conference center,

GRACE Food Pantry Update

The GRACE Food Pantry is combating the COVID-19 outbreak with ample provisions of food, hygiene supplies, infant needs, and pet food for GRACE clients. In order to lessen face-to-face contacts as much as possible, early last week the Food Pantry began disbursing provisions by drive-thru. Clients are directed to pull through the Food Pantry parking lot and receive a week’s worth of groceries. Dietary restrictions and food preferences are served by request. Additional cleaning supplies, hygiene materials, and other needs are provided as needed. Food Drives, usually a reliable mainstay for gathering food and supplies for the Food Pantry, are being discouraged for the time being to honor social distancing recommendations. However, grocery store donations are still being made, and Food Pantry staff members continue to fulfill pick-up arrangements. The Food Pantry is working closely with the Tarrant Area Food Bank and other resources to supplement food inventory, as needed. Senior Food Commodities,

“O-19” Halts Bingo

A shouted call of “O-19” brought Designer Bags & Bingo to a sudden halt. Of course, bingo aficionados know there is no such thing as “O-19”. The number 19 is in the “I” section and the “O” section is numbered 61 through 75. And this is just a weak attempt at making light of the tragic circumstances controlling our lives at the moment. The horrible Outbreak of COVID-19 has cancelled or postponed nearly all activities and social events. Our prayers are with all those suffering with the coronavirus, or on the frontlines with our medical heroes fighting the disease. Now, you can add the GRACE Designer Bags & Bingo (DB&B) to that long, long list of rescheduled events. DB&B was originally planned for Thursday, April 23. It will now take place on Thursday, July 16. “We are so sorry for the inconvenience this has caused,” said GRACE CEO Shonda Schaefer.

CEO’s Corner-Fighting COVID-19

Dear Friends, Here at GRACE, like everywhere, we are working to ease the grip of COVID-19. The tragic sickness is horrible enough, but for us the tragedy extends to the impact it has on our clients. Threat of infection is one thing, but many of our clients are also suffering from the many closings and cancellations in our area. Most of our clients are employed. These folks work in the service industry at the hotels and large corporations. They are the concessionaires at the airport, clerks at the mall, mom-and-pop shopkeepers, and many others. Conventions are being cancelled. High-traffic areas at the airport are being restricted. Shopping and dining at the mall and in the city are dropping off. There are dozens of other actions impacting our clients as they struggle to make better lives for themselves and their families. These are very uncertain times. But there is no time
