Housing insecurity continues to be the primary need that GRACE sees come through our doors, but the stories we hear continue to be extraordinary. There is no one cause. Just this last month we had clients come in asking for rental assistance due to a wife making a move to protect her children from their father, the loss of the primary source of income earner, and a debilitating medical emergency which led to the inability to work.
Housing insecurity doesn’t always mean homelessness, but it does always mean instability and fear. GRACE was able to assist in all three of the situations mentioned above and these households are pivoting to either return to work, apply for pre-qualified assistance, or continue to rely on GRACE to be with them during their recovery. But, what about those in our community who can’t pivot due to a disability or fixed income? GRACE is here for them too.
Most recently, the number of disabled and elderly clients who have come to our doors in desperate need of assistance has increased. They are being priced out of their homes, their communities, and places they have felt safe for years due to the rising cost of housing. GRACE is doing all we can to work with the community and use our resources to keep them home by helping with access to our food panty and secure housing costs including utilities.
