Rent Relief Amid Divorce

Earlier this month, a client came to GRACE seekingassistance with rent after experiencing significant financial hardship relatedto an ongoing divorce. She shared that the separation has been extremelydifficult, as her soon-to-be ex-husband has been financially abusive throughoutthe process.

Although the court ordered that he pay both spousal andchild support and that she could remain in the marital home until it was sold,he forced her and their 5 children to move out before the home was placed onthe market.

Thankfully, housing was quickly secured, but the onlyavailable option that could accommodate her family was a rental home costing$3,500 per month, placing a substantial financial burden on her household. Hersoon-to-be ex’s court-ordered support, which he is not paying in full, is theonly way they can afford the rental. While she has legal representation, herattorney is working pro bono due to her financial circumstances, which has madeit challenging for her case to receive consistent attention.

Due to his noncompliance with court orders, she hasstruggled to cover essential expenses. Understanding the severity of theclient’s circumstances and the responsibility she carries as the sole providerfor five children during this difficult transition, GRACE was able to step inand provide support.

GRACE was able to provide partial rental assistance in anamount that helped to stabilize the household during this critical time andoffer the family access to the Food Pantry to help ensure their immediate needswere met.
