Even though the last school bells are chiming and summer is quickly in session, there are still some teachable moments to offer your children that will help other students prepare for the upcoming school year.
GRACE is launching its Back to School initiative, which includes school supplies, clothing and sneakers for kids of all ages.
Here are a few ideas to help us meet the needs of children in the community.
Walk in their shoes
The summer is an opportune time to talk to your children about the needs of their peers, whose families may be struggling to purchase essential items, such as sneakers.
Encourage your kids to clean their gently-used shoes they’ve recently outgrown to donate to the Clothing Room, or inspire them to host a lemonade stand and purchase a new pair of shoes on behalf of another student their age.
Help families with their load by filling up backpacks
Make it a family affair to fill one or more backpacks on behalf of a child at a similar age, and drop off at GRACE Main during business hours.
We’ve generated a list of needs that cover children from elementary school through high school, along with many ideas that you and your group and can collect the goods with plenty of summer days by the pool to spare.
Host a collection drive
New socks and underwear are much-needed, often overlooked clothing essential for growing children whose parents may feel the stress of purchasing multiple items for all of their children. GRACE feels privileged to help alleviate this burden and give a child the confidence he or she needs to start a new school year with proper necessities.
When families share their blessings with others, it ensures that we all meet the needs of children whose parents might be in the midst of a difficult life season.
