Planting/Tending Schedule 2013

 

Clean Up and Preparation, Dec. 29, 2012. Pull spent plants, chop into compost. Dig up strawberries, clear out grass, replant. Dig out Mint from Bed 2. Plant additional raspberries, mulch with newspaper, carboard and other barrier materials.  Turn compost piles. 12:00 noon until done.

 

Manure and Till, Saturday, Jan. 26.  Final harvest of broccoli, cabbage. Spread manure, blood meal and bone meal on all beds, till. Spray dormant oil spray on the fruit trees. Weed around fruit trees.  Prune fruit trees as needed.  (The oil smothers pests who therefore do not get to multiply.) 12:00 noon till done.

 

Early Spring Planting, Saturday Feb.2. This will be a major seeding date--Carrots, onions, potatoes, cabbage and broccoli (plants),  rosemary, cilantro, parsley, oregano,  12:00 noon till done.

 

Mid Spring Planting, Saturday March 23.  Plant squash and  succession cilantro, dill (seeds) and interplant marigolds, nasturtiums to ward off pests. Plant tomatoes and peppers (plants). Groom the fruit trees, give them manure top dressing, renewal of mulch, pulling grass that has encroached.  Stake raspberries and cage tomatoes. Weed and mulch early crops, raspberries and strawberries. Mulch walkways.  9:00 am til done.  (Lynn Clem group) Parker Kazmierski-individual.

 

Spring Tending, Saturday April 13.  Weed and mulch around our newly established tomatoes, squashes and peppers, as well as replenish mulch in our walkways. Seed marigolds where missing.  9:00 am till done.

 

Late Spring Planting, Saturday May 18. Plant cucumber, cantaloupe, watermelon. Weed as needed. 9:00 am til done. (tentative Eagle Project Aman Sunderji to be completed May 18, 2013)

 

Special Project at Heritage Garden Site:  Donate materials and labor to remove grass from around and between the beds, place new weed barrier and loads of mulch on top of the weed barrier.  Would like to have this project completed in Spring.

 

Early Summer Planting, June 1. Plant succession squash (seeds) and succession (late) tomatoes and peppers (plants), plant tomatillos and green beans. Weed and mulch generally.  8:00 am till done.

 

Tomato Pruning, Saturday July 27. Gather fruits.  Prune back vines to promote second growth of new stems and blossoms for fall production. Weed and mulch generally. 8:00 am till done.

 

Early Fall Planting, Saturday September 7. Remove spent crops, apply manure and/or finished compost. Plant succession, squash, cucumbers---as space allows. Groom fruit trees.  8:00 am till done.

 

Late Fall Planting, Saturday October 6.  Plant broccoli, cabbage (plants), garlic, cilantro—as space allows. Weed and mulch. 9:00 am.
